News Media Bias

In Thursday's edition [article link] of the New York Times, the New York Times/CBS polling numbers were buried back on A-17. The headline on the front page quoted "growing unease" with the healthcare plan. But, the story didn't even include the dropping polling numbers on government-run healthcare. Most newspapers, major and small, include polling numbers on the front page. USA Today is a prime example of this, especially during the eight years of the Bush Administration. To make matters worse, the Times interjects it's own opinion in the news story by stating "... healthcare opponents used $9 million on television ads to sway public opinion." I'm curious how much was spent by advocates of healthcare reform. Unfortunately, the NY Times did not see fit to report that amount for some odd reason.

I've harped and wailed about news media bias since before the Presidential Election last year. It was obvious who MSNBC, CBS, CNN, the Boston Globe and, of course, the NY Times supported. And, it will always be my opinion the news media, intentionally or unintentionally, affected the outcome of Democratic Primaries and the Presidential Election. That is not supposed to take place in a democracy. The New York Times is not supposed to be the Pravda of the United States. Their age old motto is "All the news that is fit to print." But, that is the problem. They are no longer in the business of just reporting the news. Instead, they take a political position and use their influence as the most powerful print media in the USA, if not the world, to further their own political agenda. The news media does try to shape public opinion in the way they present the news. The Dan Rather assassination report on President George W. Bush was just another in a long line of blackeyes for the news media. That man should have been fired on the spot. Regardless of what you think of President Bush, that hit piece was totally uncalled for in this day and time.

The only thing the news media should do is just report the news. People are not interested in their opinion. If you want to give your opinion, make it known from the outset and do not try to portray it as news. It is not surprising that print and electronic media is suffering today. Sure, some of it has to do with a rapidly changing technological world in which we live. But, a great deal of it has to do with trust. The late Walter Cronkite was probably the last news journalist that was respected and trusted. When he turned against the Vietnam War, he made it known it was his opinion on CBS News. Today, we have Katie Couric on CBS News. I think that says it all right there.

Hillary Still Has Not Given Up Hope!

For a person who has no desire to run for elective office anytime soon, Hillary Clinton sure has the makings of of someone who seems to smell blood in the water. According to this report in the NY Daily News [article link], Hillary has an eight person political team working for her. They are characterized by a Hillary spokesman as "caretakers" for her failed campaign for President. Something else that surprised me; she is about 1-3 million dollars in the black. Her campaign was swimming in red ink at the end of the campaign. Not sure how that happened. Maybe she had a hellacious contribution period from late last year to the present. But, she still has a campaign team on standby, apparently. That is quite telling.

Hillary states "That's not anything that is at all on my radar screen," when asked about her political ambitions. But, she is a notorious liar. Who can forget her outright lie during the campaign when she said her entourage landed in Bosnia under sniper fire? Personally, and this is strictly just opinion, I think Hillary is laying in wait for President Obama's ratings to continue to drop. Right now, he is at -11% insofar as approval/disapproval ratings. That is a far cry from the approval standing he had in January. If Obama's health care initiative is defeated, the President will be severely weakened. If Cap and Trade is beaten in the Senate (which seems a real possibility right now), it would be politically devastating for Obama. One of those losses would be a serious political blow. Both would virtually strip President Obama of any political clout less than a year into his Presidency. This would be a dream come true for Hillary. I think she would then resign from office as Secretary of State (where she is marginalized by Obama) and run against President Obama in the Democratic Primaries again 2012. She is power crazy. To Hillary Clinton, it's all about power. She learned a lot from her likewise egomaniacal husband. If you think she has given up hope to become the first female President of the USA, you would be wrong.

Nature Wednesday

Continuing the theme of nature's fury from last week, here are three tornadoes, including one water spout. We see these water spouts quite a bit on the gulf. Just not nearly this big, however.

New Hurricane Law in Texas

A new state law in the state of Texas [article link] now gives police the power to force evacuations when deemed mandatory by the governor. The law goes into effect Septemeber 1 of this year, which is the very heart of the hurricane season. Although arrests are unlikely with police having to deal with potential looters during an evacuation, they do now have the authority to arrest those who refuse to leave.

I have mixed feelings about this new law in Texas. I live right in the middle of hurricane ally here on the gulf coast (Mobile, AL). Depending upon what category the storm is and if we are east or west of the hurricane's eye, I usually just stay put. If we are west of the eye and it is Cat II or more, I probably would leave. I stayed during Katrina and that was enough to put the fear of God into me. Like so many people along the gulf, we look nervously toward the gulf this time of year, especially in August and September. That is when the gulf is at its absolute warmest level. If a tropical storm or Cat I hurricane comes into the gulf this time of year, it will blow up quickly as we saw with Katrina and Wilma.

But, the idea of being forced out of my home by the state is something that really bothers me. I mean, I can see on one hand their logic. They don't want to send police in harms way to rescue people who refused orders to leave when they had the chance. I understand this. However, it's my property and my home that is in danger, and if something happens to me, I have no one to blame but myself. In most cases, however, I would obey a mandatory evacuation. They don't make mandatory evacuations lightly. That means a severe hurricane is making a dead aim on our city. That's usually time to leave. If you don't, you have to accept the consequences.

Another Visit with My Aunt

I've posted before about my aunt who has been placed in a local nursing home. She has Alzheimer's Disease. She has been like a second mother to me during my entire lifetime. It is almost like watching my own mother die all over again. Except this time, the death is slow and lingering. She repeats herself constantly now. She must have asked me about 20 times in the 30 minute visit if I was doing ok. I assured her each and every time I was just fine. I'm not sure what stage she's in now. But, she needs assistance with everything. It's tough, really tough to visit her. But, visit her I do. Visit her, I must.

It's hard to look at her. She isn't the vibrant, laughing woman I have known my entire life. Instead, she is one who seems confused by the most simplest of questions now. And it's entirely understandable why she has this difficulty. Alzheimers is a take no prisoners disease. It slowly robs you of everything you have gained through the years of your life experiences. Ultimately, it robs you of your life. There is no way known to prevent it. There is no known cure.

As we left, my aunt told me she was happy we had come to visit her. Her children (my cousins) would be in later to see her. She turned back once again to look at the outside world through the small window in her room. Just as she was doing when we came in to see her. The fact she struggled to remember my name as we left was a sharp reminder of what a terribly dreadful and heartbreaking disease Alzheimers truly is to us all.

Bill Cosby "Shocked" by Obama's Statement

Comedian Bill Cosby expressed shock [article link] over President Obama's statement (...police acted stupidly) about a Cambridge Police Sargent who detained and arrested Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates. Gates was arrested at his home by Sargent James Crowley. Police were called when a neighbor thought they saw someone breaking into Mr. Gates home. The reasons for the arrest are still unclear why police would arrest someone at their home. Apparently, Mr. Gates would not show proof of ID and was arrested.

Bill Cosby said that the President spoke too soon. I think that is apparent. President Obama himself even said in his original statement that he didn't have all the facts. Yet, he saw fit to say the "police acted stupidly." Why even make such a statement when you acknowledge you don't have all the facts? It doesn't makes sense and it certainly doesn't make sense the President of United States would say such a thing. The President admitted he might be biased since he and the Harvard professor are good friends. Again, we go back to why he saw fit to even comment on the arrest since he also mentioned he "might" be biased. It's not a comment you would expect from a sitting U.S. President. How do you think the police of Cambridge felt upon hearing they "acted stupidly?" I'm sure there is much more to this story than we know right now. It may turn out that Professor Gates was wronged by the Cambridge Police. If that turns out to be the case, I hope the police are severely punished. It's going to be interesting to see who actually apologizes once all the facts are known in this case. Right now, no one is willing to apologize, including the President of the United States.

GM Global Sales Fall 22 Percent

General Motors (or Government Motors, if you prefer) has seen sales [article link] worldwide drop 22% in the first half of 2009. GM emerged from bankruptcy protection on July 10th. The fall in sales also reflected a continued downward spiral of models that GM intends to trim from its overall line of automobiles.

I have talked to people who have stated they would never under any circumstances buy another car from GM. Why? A lot of people are still incensed over GM taking government money from the so-called "government bailout." Most people do not believe they will ever see any profit from the taxpayer money used to prevent a complete collapse by GM. GM has no one but themselves to blame for this. Up until the late 70s and early 80s, GM did not really take an interest in quality. To GM, it was not about customer satisfaction. It was all about making the sale. Now, they are paying the price for it just as I told the salesman who sold me my '88 Pontiac GrandAm about twenty years ago. That GrandAm was a piece of junk with a quad-4 engine that caused vibration throughout the car if you went over 55MPH. His suggestion was to use the car just for trips inside the city. I'm not sure I have ever been more disgusted and angry in my life as I was at that moment. I won't repeat what I said to him since I intend to keep this a family friendly blog. But, I will say I told him he and his company would pay for their lack of interest in putting a quality product on the market some day. Turns out I was more right than I could have ever imagined.

Nature Wednesday

For the past few weeks, I have shown the kinder, gentler side of nature with beautiful lakes, mountains, waterfalls and so forth. Now, I will concentrate on the "fury of nature," at least for this week.

I've seen three tornadoes in my lifetime. But, never seen lightning around any tornado. I have certainly never seen a more fascinating pic than the one below with the tornado and lightning bolt. Notice what appears to be a radio tower to the far right. That is most likely a 110 foot tower. Gives some perspective into size. The forest fire with the deer in the shallow steam is fascinating to me. I first saw this about five years ago. I was told this was a fire in Montana. At first glance, one wonders why the deer are not fleeing for their lives. I thought they might be surrounded. But, if that were the case, then the person taking the pic was surrounded also. I doubt he would take time to make this pic if his or her life were in danger. Instead, I think these deer were in shock. Being in that shallow stream gave them only a momentary reprieve. I doubt they survived this ordeal. These are some awesome pics.

One Post on Lowlifes, Another on a Moron

In Whittier, CA, [article link] thieves are targeting mourners at cemeteries as they are burying loved ones. Purses, laptops (not sure why someone would take a laptop to a cemetery)in unlocked cars. I know people are thinking they shouldn't have unlocked cars. But, how many people actually think to lock their cars when they are at funeral services in the cemetery? I guess it is a sign of the times. There are some really lowlife people in this world.

I wouldn't say Whoopi Goldberg is a lowlife. But, I think she most certainly qualifies in the the Moron (yes, with a capital M) status category. Whoopi said [article link] on "The View" she had misgivings as to whether or not men actually landed on the moon as we celebrated the 40th anniversary of the Moon Landing yesterday. Whoopi wanted to know why the flag was rippling "if there was no wind." Also, she wanted to know who took the picture. Whoopi, it's called a "tripod" for the camera. If you had an ounce of brains you would know that or, at least, entertain the idea. The rippling flag was due to vibration once the flag was planted. How can anyone on earth question if the moon landing actually happened??? And they pay Whoopi for her opinion??? Only in America.

Walter Cronkite 1916-2009

One of the more iconic symbols of TV journalism, Walter Cronkite, passed away last Friday [article link] at the age of 92. He was considered the most trusted name in journalism in an age of innocence when people believed everything they heard on TV. His was a voice of reason, trust, integrity and a sense that "everything is going to be ok." A lot of people simply referred to him as "Uncle Walter" since so many felt a connection to him back in the day. And then there was that all to familiar sign off..."And that's the way it was..."

I will never forget, as a small boy, watching tears stream down Walter Cronkite's face as he read the official news report that President John F. Kennedy had died. And I will never forget the excitement Walter Cronkite showed when Apollo 11 took off for the first moon landing. How ironic is it that Walter Cronkite dies just a few days before the 40th anniversary of the first Moon Landing? It seems as poetic as when an almost equally admired journalist, Charles Kuralt, passed away on Independence Day some years back.

While I admit that Walter Cronkite's politics were practically a 180 to mine, I will always credit him with a change in opinion I had about our involvement in Vietnam. I had initially supported our time there (prior to actually going there in '71). But, when Walter Cronkite came out against the war, in commentary on CBS News, it gave me reason to pause and reconsider. I discovered he was right, but for a different reason. I felt we had gotten ourselves involved in a war we had no intention of winning. That was why I found myself in agreement with Uncle Walter. He will be missed.

Just Musing About This and That

My '06 Honda Civic went out of warranty Tuesday. I had been hounded by Honda to extend both by mail and on the phone. I just didn't think it necessary. This morning, I drove to eat breakfast and noticed a rattle I had not heard before. I'm thinking...uh oh...what now? I've had little things go wrong with this Civic such as a windshield pump motor going out, and some other minor things. I started thinking back to my '88 Pontiac GrandAm. Three weeks out of warranty and the automatic transmission going out.

People seem to get upset over the least little things these days. I had to go to the doctor recently for a semi-annual checkup. There were only 3 people in the waiting room when I arrived. Stunned by that, I asked the receptionist what the deal was. She replied, "The economy. People are starting to neglect their health now because of money woes." Things really are getting bad. But, I digress...one of the three women there got upset because she had been waiting "at least 15 minutes and going to be late for a hair appointment." She was furious. I felt like telling her if she ONLY knew how many times I had come to this doctor's office to wait 3 hours before seeing the doctor.

There is a company in my area that has always prided itself with its motto of "Once employed, always employed." A German company, their feeling was it was too expensive to lay off employees who they had invested thousands of dollars on training. Well, not any longer. Last week that company laid off 57 of it's employees, an 18% reduction of its workforce.

Many that follow this blog know I have a beagle named Ralph. Ralph "adopted" me back in April of 2008, about the same time I started up this blog. He played a prominent part in my blog novel, "Diary: Alone on Earth" also. It seems that Ralph has become afraid of squirrels. About a month ago, I noticed he had a nice scratch on his nose. Concerned it could have been a snake bite, I took him to the vet. Vet said he had not been bitten by a snake. Most likely, he rubbed it against the fence or something. That may be the case. But, now, instead of wanting to go in the backyard and bark and run and chase squireels, he wants to follow me into the house. I made him go back outside and play. About two minutes later, he is jumping up on the back door, yelping and wanting in the house. There was one nice sized squirrel on the back deck that Ralph wanted no part of now. It appears his days of chasing squirrels has come to an end. The squirrels of Lakeside Court have had enough of Ralph's barking and chasing. One squirrel in particular has had enough!

Everyone have a great weekend.

Let Them Eat Dust!!!

House Democrats currently plan to tax the wealthy [article link] to pay for the 1-2 trillion dollar government run health care package. The good news? If you make under a million bucks a year...no taxes! The millionaires club of the USA will fund the 30 to 50 million (depending on how charitable the Democrats are when they make these estimates) "Americans" without health insurance. More good news for the millionaires club...the 5.4% surtax will be stolen...eh, taken from their AGI. This means those nasty old millionaires will have to fork over a portion of their Capital gains and dividends. How dare these people try to become successful in the USSA? How dare they try to make a good living for themselves? The audacity of such people! The object now is make all the money you want...but be prepared to "spread the wealth" when Uncle Sam comes knocking.

But, leave it to good old Charlie Rangel to ease the pain of the USA millionaires by saying, "...causes the least amount of pain on the least amount of people.” I bet that makes those capitalist pigs feel better about being eased out of some of their fortune, right? And, Big Brother is taking matters a bit further; if you don't obtain health insurance, you will lose 2.5% of your income for not doing so. All this is to bring health care under control, you understand. It has nothing to do with government wanting to control health care (GM, banks, etc.) and intruding upon your life. No, this is all for YOUR benefit because you are too damn stupid to do it on your own. So, dear old Uncle Sam is going to take care of you...whether you like it or not.

Sarcasm aside (well...as much as I can), this is a disaster waiting to happen. If you like the Canadian style of health care, you'll enjoy this. As they do in Canada, a committee will decide what amount of health care you are entitled. If you need that heart operation and, let's say you are 60+...hey, you had a good life, right? The point of this all sarcastic interlude is this; the government is incapable of running itself. How the hell will they be able to run a trillion(s) dollar operation like health care for 97% of Americans? Has the federal government ever run anything efficiently? Ask yourself those questions when the Democrats continue us on this health care slippy slope. And, please, spare me the "We can't continue with what he have now blah, blah, blah." I've seen enough of this blather. What do I propose? I propose we keep the government out of our lives. That is what I propose we do about health care. There's got to be a better way than what the Democrats are trying to shove down our throats; socialized medicine.

Nature Wednesday

Just some pics of nature that I think go well in this week's "Nature Wednesday" entry. I hope you enjoy them. I really like the pic of the lightning bolt for some reason.

A Post from the Past

I've been blogging for just over 15 months now. I've had quite a few posts during that time. I've had some that I'm proud of and some not so proud. There were some posts that, ironically, got little in the way of comments. But, caused a lot of emails to be sent to me for reasons I don't understand. Conversely, there have been some controversial posts like "This is a Black World" of just last week. It generated some comments and some emails that were not suitable for family viewing. That's ok. It comes with the territory.

The post down below was one of my earlier posts from May 7, 2008. It was to be an ongoing topic which I have neglected, I am sorry to say. But, everyone seemed to like it, both in public comments and private email. I hope you will enjoy it also.

Mr. Mullane: His Story

"Everyone has a story to tell. Regardless if it’s some CEO of a Fortune 500 company or a homeless man in the street. Everyone has the story of his or her life to share with the world...if only the world would listen.”

That was a common refrain from my mother. I didn’t pay much attention to her when she said it or even try to figure out what it meant. As I grow older, I realize just how profound that statement truly is to me. It’s true. There are stories to be told by everyone in every facet of life. Some are not so pleasant. Others are profiles in courage. I’m going to share one of those stories that I have gained knowledge of over the years. I became enriched with the knowledge of this man upon hearing the story of his life. I’ll share others in the future.

In 2002, when I was still attending church, every Wednesday morning a group of us would get together to go to nursing homes and try to bring some joy in residents lives. It was not an easy task. It was something I did not look forward to for a number of reasons. The main reason is just the sheer magnitude of sadness that you saw in nursing homes. People left to wait on death because their children can no longer care for them. In some cases, they just want to be rid of them. To those people, I say, your day is coming.

There was one man in a wheelchair, at this one particular nursing home we visited quite often, who would not join in with the singing and games. He kept pretty much to himself. After we celebrated the 87th birthday of one particular resident, I brought some cake over to this gentleman in the wheelchair. I introduced myself and offered him the slice of cake. You would have thought I had offered him all the gold at Ft. Knox by his reaction. I was dumbfounded as to why he was parked away from everyone and stuck to himself. He told me “this place is for old people. I don’t know why my son put me here.” I was momentarily taken aback. But, his big grin told me this man was a quick study. Mr. Mullane, as he had introduced himself, said he just didn’t find much in common with any of the residents at the home. He just preferred staying to himself and collecting his thoughts. He carried on a little small talk and eventually Mr. Mullane got to telling me about himself.

Mr. Mullane was a WWII vet who was among the first troops to arrive at the Buchenwald concentration camp in Germany. He said what he witnessed there gave him nightmares even to the present day of his life in the nursing home. Mr. Mullane said the scarecrows that actually walked that day, still walked in his nightmares decades later. The gas ovens, the stench of an unholy death throughout the camp brought him to the point of madness. In fact, the three years he fought in Europe and the horrors he witnessed, put him in a VA hospital for two years after the war was over. He had a good, patient and loving family that saw him through the tough times after the war was finally over.

After leaving the VA hospital, Mr. Mullane got a job with the U.S. Post Office in Carollton, MO where he worked from 1947 to his retirement party celebrating 50 years of employment with the post office in 1997. Mr. Mullane endured great hardships along the way in his life. He lost his oldest son to polio back in 1953. A house that he and his best friend had built with their own blood, sweat and tears burned to the ground seven years later in 1960. He and his family lost everything they had in the fire. His wife suffered from “forgetfulness” (a pause here…I’m just assuming Mrs. Mullane had Alzheimer's based on all that he told me). She eventually died from her “forgetfulness” in 1974. Mr. Mullane never remarried, although his surviving son and daughter encouraged him to. But, he said the love of his life was gone forever. There could never be anyone else for him.

He spent the remainder of his active years making sure his son and daughter got a college education. Both wanted him to live with one or the other. But, he would not hear of it. Mr. Mullane felt like he would be intruding on his children’s lives. He had insisted on living the remainder of his life in the home, far away from his daughter in Los Angeles, CA. His son still lived in Alabama. But, his son’s job had relocated him to Birmingham. He refused to leave to go up there. He said he liked it here on the gulf, even the hurricanes (I was hoping he was joking about that).

Mr. Mullane passed away at the ripe old age of 88 the day after Christmas last year. I went back every week after he related this story to me to see him and just talk (once a month in 2004), even after I stopped attending that particular church. He was a wonderful man and lived a life of hardships and sacrifice. Somehow, he persevered through it all. He was just one story in this journey we call life.

This is the Reason...

...people are having a tough time buying into global warming aka climate change; Barbara Boxer's scare tactics. Saturday [article link], the same senator who insisted an Army General refer to her as "Senator," stated "...there will be dire results: droughts, floods, fires, loss of species, damage to agriculture, worsening air pollution and more" if the deity known as the Climate control bill isn't passed. Mrs. Boxer was, of course, referring to the "cure-all" of Global Warming. Now, the Global Warming (you guys started with that, I'll finish with it) alarmists are making all kinds of predictions if this bill is passed by the Senate. Mrs. Boxer and her screaming banshees are saying "...clean-energy jobs, reduced reliance on foreign oil and less pollution for the nation's children." I find it remarkable a Democrat is concerned about this nation's children today. This is the same political party that screamed we needed a trillion dollar stimulus package or the USA would fall off the face of the earth. We have mortgaged their future and the future of THEIR children as well, Mrs. Boxer. Now, to show even more concern for "our children," they want to pass 1-2 trillion dollar package for a government run health insurance program. Forget the children children comment. The Democrats are going to mortgage the children's children's children future with this monstrosity. Question; has there ever been a government run program that was efficient? Amtrak? Try again.

Personally, I hope Barbara Boxer and her lemmings continue these alarmist tactics. It only serves to awaken the American people to the outright lies of aging 60s hippies and tree huggers such as Barbara Boxer. This post is not intended to debate the topic of Global Warming. Instead it is meant to bring attention to the alarmist tactics by people such as AlGore (and how much has that bank account increased since you started this whole thing, ex-senator AlGore?) and Barabara "Call me Senator" Boxer engage in to try and get their point across. I discovered something a long time ago that I use as a rule of thumb to develop my position on any issue. If the left-wingers of the Democratic party, the Hollywood elite, and the ultra wealthy (such as George Soros) are all linked together on one issue, something is wrong.

"This is a Black World"

In Akron, Ohio, a family was attacked by black teenagers [article link] after a day of celebrating July 4th. The family, the Marshalls who are white, were standing outside in the yard of a friend when dozens of black teens attacked them. The teens were saying "This is our world...this is a black world." Mr. Marshall's friend was attacked by the teens and Mr. Marshall went to his defense. Then all the black teens attacked. Mr. Marshalls 15 year old daughter, Rachel, was knocked down by the teens and held down. Mr. Marshall was the one most seriously hurt. He spent 5 nights in the critical care unit of a local hospital. Mr. Marshall now fears for his family's safety and financial status. He is a laid off construction worker with no health insurance. Akron police are not yet prepared to call this a "hate crime" since "no other reports of victims assaulted by the group that night."

I'm sitting here typing up this post...and wondering if the police in Akron are living in another universe. The teens trespassed, yelling "This is a black world," and attack the Marshall family for no other reason than that they are white. What exactly constitutes a "hate crime" against a white family in Akron? I think we all know what would have happened if this were a group of white teens yelling "This is a white world" and attacked a black family. Would it have been labeled a "hate crime?" Of course it would. And the FBI would mostly likely be in Akron investigating. And you can bet Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton would be there the very next day blasting the Akron police for not apprehending and placing under arrest the guilty white teens. Racism is racism. All forms of racism, black on white or white on black, should be immediately condemned. But, there is nothing but silence from Jesse Jackson and Al Sharpton over this. Oh, once arrests are made in the case, I can assure you, you'll hear from both these shysters.

A Child's Love

I watched some of the Michael Jackson memorial service Tuesday. It was both heartfelt and a bit over the top at the same time. I felt it was inappropriate for a shyster like Al Sharpton to be there. It was a bit odd to listen to former NBA superstar Magic Johnson repeat several times Michael Jackson's love for KFC chicken. We got it the first 4 times, Magic. Please. This was a memorial service. It was good to see singer Smokey Robinson come and give his remembrances of the late superstar.

The family coming to the podium was hard to watch. I was stunned to see the children of Michael Jackson there. He had always shielded them from the bright glare of publicity. I could not help but think if he could have spoken, Michael Jackson would have said NO to that event. But, there they were, looking puzzled and a bit stunned. The most poignant moment of the entire service was his daughter Paris saying, "I just want to say, ever since I was born, Daddy has been the best father you could ever imagine. I just want to say I love him so much."
Eleven year old Paris then collapsed into the arms of her Aunt Janet. If that did not tug at your heart, you have no heart and you have no soul.

Despite my many misgivings about Michael Jackson, the accusations, the odd behavior he exhibited at times (including hanging an infant off a ledge), he obviously was a good father to his children or at least as good as he was capable. Paris loved her father. I'm sure her father loved her very much as well. So, if nothing else, I will try to remember Michael Jackson for being a good father to his children. I hope his tortured soul is at rest.

Nature Wednesday

I don't know about you. But, I love waterfalls. Our family would frequently go to North Carolina on vacation to visit friends during the summer. They had a steam that went over a hill creating a beautiful waterfall. I never wanted to leave! I still love waterfalls. I trust you will also after viewing the pictures below.

Do Not Call List

Like millions of people nationwide, I signed up for the "do not call list" the very day it started. I have checked, at least once a year, to ensure my phone numbers are still listed as "do not call." Charities and political calling are exempt from this list. Also exempt is any company with which you currently do business, such as a bank, department store, etc.

I only have one credit card with my bank and don't mind if they call. I promptly tell them I am not interested. However, since the start of this year, I have noticed I have gotten solicitations from companies with whom I have never done business. Yesterday I got a call from one department store chain asking me if I was aware of their July 4th sale. I said, "Independence Day weekend is over and are you aware I am on the do not call list?" The caller acted as if he didn't have a clue what I was talking about. This happens to me about three times a week despite being on the "list" since its inception.

I don't know what has emboldened telemarketers all of a sudden. I went years and years of not receiving any calls from them. Now, since January, they are calling me again. Just curious if anyone else has had this problem. I have filed complaints against the companies. But, the telemarketers calling on behalf of these companies continue unabated. Only thing I do now is if I don't recognize the number, I don't answer. If it is important, they will leave a message on voicemail. The "Do Not Call List" simply isn't working for me any longer.

Sarah Palin

It was with shock and a bit of dismay I learned that Governor Sarah Palin of Alaska would resign [article link] effective July 26th. It was stunning to many conservatives and to the left-wing hate groups as well. She has been inundated with accusations almost from the time she was announced as John McCain's running mate last year. Governor Palin has been hit with ethical charges, accusations about her personal life and her family as well.

I do think for whatever reason Governor Palin decided to step down, she has effectively ended her political career. Resigning from office after just 2 1/2 years when the heat got to be too much for her? She doesn't know what heat is if she were somehow able to defeat The Anointed One in 2012. Maybe she decided it just wasn't worth the headache and heartache of her family being brought into the political arena. If that is the reason, I don't blame her. Politics is not for the faint of heart. But, if she has quit now to focus on running for the Presidential Nomination, of the Republican Party, then it was a crucial mistake on her part. Her opponents would use this against her time and time again. They would say she can't take the pressure of the Oval Office. And, really, how could you argue otherwise? I can't say I would have supported her even if she had waited another year. Outside of a very good speech, what would be her qualifications? Yes, I know the very same critique was made of The Anointed One. But, we all know there is a double standard in regards to the Democrats by the news media. President Obama has proven it's "Amateur Hour" at the White House. After he bankrupts America, someone with foresight and experience is going to have to take over as President to enable us to recover. I don't think Sarah Palin is that person.

I do believe that Governor Palin was viewed as a threat by left-wing zealots and in the Democratic Party. It was a virtual non-stop barrage of lies and innuendo against this woman. And, speaking of women, where was NOW in this entire foray? They are a bunch of hypocritical liberals (to put it kindly). Their political agenda was laid clear by Sarah Palin. If nothing else, Governor Palin proved what the "National Organization for Women" was truly all about.

Michael Jackson Death

No, I'm not going to report the obvious; Michael Jackson's death of last week. I don't have to. It seems this is all you can see and hear on TV and radio these days. Granted, he was the king of pop music. Michael Jackson was an immensely talented individual. But, he was also a troubled individual. There is no escaping the fact he spent an inordinate amount of time with young boys at his Neverland Ranch. Most are saying he was falsely accused of being a pedophile by gold digging parents who consented to allow their children to stay with him. I fully understand there are people like that who will take advantage of a mega-star like MJ. That may well be the case. But, the one thing that gives me pause is the kiddie porn found at his home during the last investigation. Of course, his supporters say it was planted there by overzealous police who wanted him in the same way LAPD planted evidence against OJ Simpson. Whatever.

But, in my opinion, the whole thing has been blown out of proportion over his death. He has had two autopsies and now ABC News reports [article link] Federal Drug Agents [DEA] have been asked to further investigate his death. It's ridiculous. Michael Jackson died of heart failure. It was due to a combination of heart disease, powerful prescription drugs and neglect of his health that caused his death. It just seems there is a witch hunt going on. It seems people want a scapegoat to pin his death upon. The most likely villain to pin that role on is his doctor, who valiantly tried to save his life with CPR. Now, this doctor has gone into hiding due to death threats. There are some people in this world who are in a serious need of a life. Seriously.

There is indecision right now as to where Michael Jackson is to be buried. It could be a memorial service as soon as today. I just hope he has found the peace and serenity he was never able to find in life.

Democratic Party: Too Liberal?

The latest Gallup Poll [article link] finds that Americans are increasingly seeing the Democratic Party as being too liberal. The poll finds that a significant increase from 39% to 46% see the Democrats getting the liberal tag. This is the largest increase since the Democrats mid-term losses back in 1994. I believe that is what sparked the Republican's "Contract With America" and led to the GOP controlling both the House and Senate.

With a President as the former most liberal U.S. Senator, what did Americans think the Democratic Party was going to do? Take a middle of the road approach to issues dear to the liberal heart such as healthcare and "climate change?" Of course not. They were going to swing dramatically to the left. Many people who voted for Obama are amazed at the brisk pace he is trying to get legislation passed on such things as healthcare, climate change, goverment takeover of banks, the automobile industry and stimulus spending to invoke change in an "economic recovery." And how's that whole economic recovery thing going, President Obama? We were told 8% unemployment would be the limit with this stimulus package. Now, we hear it could surpass 10%.

It appears Obama and the Democrats are in trouble if this poll is taken literally. Sure, more Americans still view the Democrats more favorably than they do the dysfunctional Republican Party right now. But, that appears to changing with more and more spending by the Democratic majority. They just can't help themselves, it seems. Democrats never met a tax dollar they didn't like. Spending is in the liberal DNA. The "blame Bush" excuse is wearing thin also. People want results and they aren't getting them. I have to believe the sudden surge in belief the Democratic Party is too liberal is a direct result in the Obama Administration's attack on the paycheck of every American citizen. Remember the promise of not taxing anyone making under $250K? Just wait...that promise is about to be broken in much the same manner as another failed U.S. President who said "Read my lips. No new taxes." President Obama...take note.
